A wonderful contemporary studio pottery statement figural bowl titled ‘Conversations’ by Carol McNicoll (British, b.1943) dating from around 2005. A wonderful reflection on modern society the bowl captures three seated long haired figures wearing sunglasses leaning forward with their elbows resting on their legs and holding up what appears to be a mobile phone. The figures are hand decorated with floral designs to their trousers and abstract graffiti style designs to the tops in black and colors on a blue ground. With patterned chequerboard designs to their glasses and with gold applied to their hair and the phones. The figures sit around a pinched shaped bowl with incised diamond patterning and glazed in a contrasting pink color with the inner bowl glazed in blue and hand decorated with floral designs and leafy stems. The bowl is signed Carol McNicoll to the base along with the title. A wonderful display and ‘conversation’ piece!

Examples of Carol McNicoll’s work can be found in the collections of the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum among others.
