A large and impressive Wenford Bridge Studio Pottery bowl hand decorated with a bird by renowned English potter Seth Cardew (British, 1934-2016) and dated 1989.

Seth Cardew was the eldest son of the famous potter Michael Cardew, who set up Wenford Bridge pottery in 1949, and brother of the composer Cornelius Cardew. He studied at both Chelsea School of Art and leaned sculpture at Camberwell School of Art and worked at both Elstree and Pinewood studios as a modeller and took over Wenford Bridge Pottery following his father’s death in 1983.

This large hand thrown bowl is wide round shape with a raised rim and is a good example of his brushwork designs with a bird set amidst leafy twigs hand painted in blue and brown on a grey ground. The base and outer rim with oxidised glaze spotting and patterning. The bowl has both impressed artist SC marks along with Wenford Bridge Pottery marks and is also dated 1898.
