A highly collectable and delightful silver gilt novelty egg containing a surprise Jack in the Box clown by renowned silversmith and artist Stuart Devlin (Australian, 1931-2018) and dated 1980.

Stuart Devlin created a range of silver gilt eggs each themed with differing content which would create a surprise for the beholder opening the egg. He also produced a large range of more utilitarian wears which, along with the eggs, have today become highly sought after and collectable.

This finely and heavily made egg has a textured patterned finish and was made in a limited edition of 300 with this example being number 34. The base of the egg is mounted internally with a spring mounted clown leaping out of a box mounted centrally on a green enamelled silver base with a pair of scissors and the string from the box lying alongside. The clown is partially gilded with red spot enamelling. The egg is numbered 34 to the base along with SD makers marks and London silver assay marks dating the egg to 1980.
