A rare and unusual Indian Kashmiri lacquer vase with mythical characters dating from the 19th century, possibly early. The wooden vase stands on a narrow rounded foot with a squat wide rounded body and a tall slender neck with a disc design. The body of the vase is extensively hand decorated with scenes portraying mythical creatures in various activities and attending to a seated person in one scene. The enamel decoration is thickly applied in polychrome embellished with gilding and the patterning continues up the neck of the vase. The vase has a red painted base and is not marked.
There is some lifting and minor loss to the enamel to the base of the neck however is otherwise in excellent condition.
