An antique French novelty bronze inkwell modeled as 'Les deux rats et l'oeuf' mounted on a red veined marble base and dating from the latter 19th century. The inkwell is based on the French fable by Jean de La Fontaine 'The Two Rats and the Egg' and portrays one of the rats pulling the other which is lying on his back and supporting the egg which forms the inkwell. The base has a stepped edge with cut recess grooves to rest a quill pen and the inkwell us not apparently marked. The bronze has a good unpolished aged patina.
