A rare, incredible and large antique Chinese carved mother of pearl mounted tea caddy with armorial for MacPherson and dating from circa 1770. The rectangular casket shaped caddy has silver metal hinges, lock with original key and side swing carrying handles with a wooden carcass covered in carved mother of pearl panels with intricate scroll work and flowering prunus. The box has carved central cartouche to the cover with an armorial for MacPherson with an inscription reading TOUCH NOT THE CAT BUT A GLOVE the armorial with a central seated cat. The inner box is lined in red velvel with gold braiding and has three partitions for tea canisters. The base has an inset green baise.
The box is offered in good condition with minor damage and losses as might be expected for a piece of this age but overall a rare and stunning example.
