A rare and important stylish mid-century French art pottery jug or sauce boat by Robert Picault and made in Vallauris in the South of France. Working closely to Picasso each piece is hand decorated with green, brown and incised patterned designs. Every item of this renowned artists work is unique and would form a real statement piece in any serious collection. This unusually shaped jug has painted initials RP to the base.

Provenance: Robert Picault (1919 - 2000) studied ceramics at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris and moved to Vallauris where, with Roger Capron, he founded the Atelier Callis in 1946. Two years later he set up his own pottery in the Chemin du Fournas. He was a friend, colleague and next-door-neighbor to Pablo Picasso, and the two learnt from each other aspects of the other's specialities. Picault was also an accomplished cinematographer and photographer, and made a series of four short films with Picasso and leading show-business personalities of the fifties.
