Code: DA23088

H: 13.5cm (5.3")Di: 6cm (2.4")

A very unusual grotesque sgraffito pattern hat pin holder titled ‘Shut your mouth’ and dating from the latter 1880’s.

The Brannam pottery was started by Thomas Brannam in Barnstaple, Devon in 1848. In 1862 his son Charles Hubert Brannam (aged 12) joined his father at the pottery however it was not until 1879 that he encouraged his father to allow him to produce art ware.

This wonderful piece made in red terracotta clay is modelled as a tall narrow grotesque elongated head of a man wearing a bow tie, with large ears and with his mouth wide open. The head has a wide round shaped base and is marked ‘Shut your mouth’ applied in white slip to the lower edge. The head has a series of pierced holes believed for the purpose of holding hatpins which were very popular at the time. The figure is incised CH Brannam Barum to the base and has an incised registration number which is difficult to decipher however suggests that this piece probably dates from around 1888.
