A very stylish Barnstaple, Devon three handled sgraffito art pottery vase decorated with birds by Alexander Lauder (British, 1836-1921) dating from around 1890. The lightly potted earthenware vase is of tall baluster shape standing on narrow flat round foot with a narrow raised top rim with three raised angled handles applied around the rim. The body of the vase is very finely hand decorated with a continuous scene divided into three panels two with birds perched on branches amidst trees and the third with a bird in flight descending on some large floral blooms. The vase is decorated in sgraffito in tones of brown, blue and green on a scratch pattern light blue ground with dark green glazes applied to the upper and lower sections of the vase. The vase is impressed LAUDER BARUM to the base.
