An exceptional antique Vienna porcelain chocolate cup and cover hand painted with a scene from Greek mythology titled Galathea and Raub der Europa dating from the 19th century. The cylindrical shaped cup has a shaped square top grooved and gilded handle with the body of the cup hand painted with a continuous watery landscape scene depicting the Rape of Europa and Galathea on the back of a sea monster with various other figures. The scene is set above a decorative beaded border in blue with gilding on a cobalt blue ground with similar patterning to the slightly domed cover. The scene is signed K Weh within the painted decoration and is exceptionally well painted. The cup has a blue underglaze beehive mark to the base along with the titles in German ‘Raub der Europa’ and ‘Galathea’.
In good condition with rubbing to the gilding.
