Dimensions:
A very unusual pair Arts & Crafts hand-crafted metal framed bookends mounted with 18th century polychrome pottery tiles dating from the 19th century. The bookends are made in a folk art style with pewter coated metal frames with shaped flat bases and scroll side supports mounted with two Dutch Royal Tichelaar Makkum polychrome Delft stoneware tiles dating from the 18th century. The tiles are hand painted with military style figures in period costume, one playing a drum and the other holding a spear. Both are set within simple landscapes painted in tones of green, blue, orange and yellow and set within a circular surround and decorative border. The bookends are not marked.
Provenance: Acquired in the British Art Market.
An attractive pair with wear to the metal frames and both tiles with some edge chipping and fine cracks across the bodies.
