A very unusual and stylish Doulton Lambeth Aesthetic movement cream jug with ruffled rim by Louisa Ayling dating from around 1882. The squat round shaped stoneware jug stands on a narrow round foot with a narrow wide round body and with a large raised rim with a ruffled edge and large pouring edge. The jug has a woven pierced and raised handle applied to the side. The body of the jug is decorated with repeat interlaced patterns in low relief interspersed with small flower heads and painted in tones of blue and white against a mottled brown ground. With a blue glazed finish to the unside edge. The jug has an impressed Doulton Lambeth mark to the unglazed base and also impressed and incised artist marks for Louisa Ayling and Emily Randall. A rare and unusual example and a real favorite!
