Dimensions:
A good quality bronzed mounted French porcelain inkwell with Chinoiserie floral painted designs possibly made by Samson of Paris in the second half of the 19th century. The inkwell is of round almost cylindrical shape and stands on a bronzed foot partially retaining some original ormolu gilding. The body of the inkwell is hand painted with floral designs in the Chinese taste and set below a border border. The top comprises of four compartments one raised probably for a quill pen and another with a hinged domed cover revealing an original removable glass inkwell containing remnants of blue ink. The inkwell is not marked and has a small filled hole to the base along with some rubbing, possibly to remove a spurious Chinese mark as used by Samson on some of their wares.
Provenance: acquired from the British Art market.
In good condition with a small hole filled to the base and some surface rubbing and wear and loss to ormolu.
