Antique English, probably Leeds hand painted pottery portrait bust of William Shakespeare dating from around 1815. The bust stands raised on a shaped socle hand painted in a marble effect and portrays Shakespeare wearing a buttoned top under a gown over a shirt tied with a cord in bow around his neck. He is hand painted with his customary beard and moustache and locks of hair. The bust is not marked.
Early examples like this one were the fore runner to an increasing demand, particularly in early Victorian times for people to own busts of famous people however these were so naively produced that the molds were often reused to portray different characters.
In good condition with customary age rubbing.
