A very finely made antique French Paris porcelain inkwell made in the Chinese style by Edmé Samson (French, 1810-1891) and dating from the latter 19th century. The inkwell is of small cube form with a rounded opening to the top and would probably have been used with a glass liner. Edmé Samson et Cie were renowned copyist (and were sometimes referred to as forgers) and reproduced works by other renowned makers predominantly from the 18th century. Due to the popularity and appeal to Western taste they also produced a lot of porcelain copying the Chinese style. This lovely inkwell is hand painted with floral panels in the famille rose palette set within a petal surround. This very fine quality inkwell has the customary pseudo Chinese markings to the base as used by Samson.

In good condition with only light wear.
