A rare and unusual early Doulton Lambeth pewter lidded salt glazed Munich beer stein dating from around 1875. The stoneware stein is of cylindrical shape with a slightly curved narrow top and is applied with a loop handle to the side mounted with a domed hat shaped cover with a raised finial to the and thumb rest. The body of the stein is applied in relief with a child with a gown and halo being the city mark for Munich with an impressed half litre mark above. The stein is decorated in ‘leopard skin’ patterned brown salt glazes and was made for Thierry & Breul, Purveyors to the Royal Bavarian and Royal English Court. The stein has Doulton Lambeth impressed makers marks. The pewter cover is also indistinctly engraved, possible with initials.
